Practical Psychopharmacology Ethics

If you're like a lot of therapists, many of your clients are taking psychotropic medicines that are prescribed from a variety of sources. Sure, some are from psychiatrists, but others may be from their family physician, nurse practitioners, family friends-- and there's always some who have no idea where they got the prescription. Despite the origin of the prescription, it is your responsibility to help follow your clients progress, their symptoms, and reactions, without stumbling into unethical or illegal advice giving around their medications. This can be tricky stuff. In this workshop we will focus on practical decisions when confronted with psychopharmacological ethical dilemmas. Attendees will become familiar with the appropriate parts of the APA ethics guidelines and how they apply to their practice. They will also review the basic legal strategies and ethical principles that apply. Finally, all participants will have the opportunity to apply the principles to specific ethical dilemmas.

Psychopharmacology

The five antidepressants every therapist should know!

Lexapro, trazadone, and bupropion! (Oh my!) There is a dizzying assortment of FDA approved antidepressants on the market today. So many that it is easy for a therapist to be confused about how they work, and the benefits and side effects associated with each of them. In this workshop, Dr. Ken Carter will "bottom line" it for you. He'll present the top 5 antidepressants that are most important to know. If you know how these 5 antidepressants work, you'll be able to understand nearly all of the rest. The second half of the workshop will summarize the evidence of the effectiveness of these antidepressants. Cheat sheets will be available.
